Mary Myrtle was born on March 17, 1920, in rural Rockford, the youngest child of five to John and Millie "McElroy" Paulus. She was baptized, received her first communion, was confirmed and married at Holy Name Catholic Church in Rockford. She attended country school and then Rockford High School. She lived her entire life in the Rockford, Cartersville and Rockwell areas.

In 1997, she moved into Rockford from Cartersville. On Feb. 3, 1937, she was united in marriage to Richard "Dick" T. O'Connor at Holy Name. They spent 64 years as husband and wife until Dick's death on Dec. 19, 2001. Even though she considered herself a housewife, homemaker, and mom, she spent many years helping her husband with their trucking business.

She enjoyed watching TV but didn't do it often because she was always busy with baking, cooking, tending her vegetable and flower gardens and doing embroidery work. There was always time to spend with family and visiting with friends and neighbors. She was a hard worker and had little time to sit and relax with her growing family. She also volunteered at the nursing home with their bingo games. While living in Cartersville, she was a member of the St. John's Guild.

Those thankful in sharing Myrtle's life include her four children and their spouses, John T. "Jack" and Cleo O'Connor, Rudd, Jerry and Maxine O'Connor, Mason City, Karen and Bob Dow, Rockford, and Mary Ann and Roger Martzahn, Greene; 18 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Lenore Alger, Spencer; and a special friend who considered her a mom, Johannah "Smith" Guttroph; along with nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her parents; husband; three sisters, Minnie Heinzerling, Louise Murphy and Catharine Dougherty; two grandchildren, Cathy Ann and Melissa O'Connor, preceded her in death.
