Samuel Keith Willman was born on April 28, 1947, in Jamestown, N. D., the son of Glenn Robert and Mary Maurine (Melville) Willman. He spent his early childhood in St. Paul, Minn., where he graduated from Murray High School in June of 1965. Later that month he joined the Marines and honorably served his country in Vietnam for 13 months and the rest of his time at Whidbey Island, at Oak Harbor, Wash. He was discharged in January of 1969. While in the service, he earned his Vietnam Service, Republic of Vietnam Campaign, National Defense, Presidential Unit Citation and Good Conduct medals and ribbons. He then joined the Army National Guard in Charles City, and then transferred to the 1133rd in Mason City.

After meeting his future wife, Sandra L. Anderson, at a summer band concert and ice cream social in Rudd, they were married on June 26, 1971, at the West Sveadahl Lutheran Church, rural St. James, Minn. They then made Rockford their permanent home.

Sam worked for several North Iowa businesses, which included Suburban Plumbing, White Farm, and the Rockford Brick and Tile until their closing, Rockford Schools, and he worked for John Deere in Waterloo until the farm crisis caused layoffs. He worked for over 19 years in production at Con-Agra Foods in Mason City until retiring due to his health in July 2003.

Sam was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church where he served as Deacon, Trustee, taught Sunday school, and was a LYO sponsor.

He was a charter and life member of the North Iowa Detachment of the Marine Corps League, the Hogan-Brislin American Legion #354 and the VFW Post #3914 in Charles City. He served in various positions with the Rockford Lions Club and, not to let any spare time go, he was the Scout Master of Troop 34 in Rockford for nine years and lead 15 young men to the rank of Eagle Scout. He was awarded the District Award of Merit from North Rivers District of the Winne-bago Council.

Sam was a president of the Booster Club, served as a coach for Little League baseball, and was a member of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local #6.

In his spare time, he played golf at the Rockford Country Club, where he scored a hole-in-one on hole #2, and played a lot of softball.

He was a collector of Lionel Model Trains and worked with model cars. Sam’s fav-orite model car was a ‘69 Mach 1 Ford Mustang in Candy Apple Red.

He enjoyed fishing trips to the family cabin, at Round Lake, Big Fork, Minn. He was an avid fan of the Vikings, Twins, and the Minnesota Golden Gophers. He was a great ice skater and even did well on roller-blades. He liked hockey, as any person from Minnesota would, and was a participant of the Skating Marching Band, where he played clarinet.

He was a huge supporter of his wife’s elementary, middle school, and high school bands, and was a chaperone on two trips to Texas and one to Florida. Sam, also, supported his children’s sports and act-ivities.

Sam participated in the Highway version of the deer Olympics with his record being Sam 5, Deer 0.

Those who will treasure Sam’s memory include his wife of 32 years, Sandi; their daughter, Amy and her husband, Rob Noss, of Dougherty; two sons, Gregory and his wife, Amber Willman, of Davenport, and Bradley Willman, of Clear Lake; three grandchildren, Annaka and Alana Noss, and Evan Willman; his parents, Glenn and step-mother, Pearl Willman, of Bismarck, N.D., and M. Maurine Ahart, of Danville, Ky.; one half-sister, Vicki Willman, of Baltimore, Md.; sister-in-law, Laurel and her husband, Brian Fredin, of Mountain Lake, Minn.; and three neph-ews, Mark, Paul and Jeff Fredin. He is also survived by several aunts; two uncles; numerous cousins; and a host of friends too numerous to name.

He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Harold Ahart; and his father and mother-in-law, Helmer and Violet Anderson.

Fullerton Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 301 West Main St., Rockford, (641) 756-3311.
