Charlotte Hattie Abben was born June 17, 1905 in rural Ackley, Hardin County, a daughter of Derk and Gepke (Diddens) Abben.

She was united in marriage to Wierd Gersema on Oct. 15, 1924 at Faith Lutheran Church in Charles City. Wierd and Lottie worked together for farmers in the Greene area until 1927 when they started farming on their own east of Greene. They remained there for 17 years until they moved to the Ulster Township in Floyd County where they farmed for 30 year before retiring in 1974 and moving into Marble Rock.

Residing in Marble Rock for the past thirty years, she was actively involved in the Methodist Church and Senior Citizens Club. Lottie's greatest enjoyment were her many friends. A special treat were the neighborhood children who visited her. Her immediate family was most precious to her. She was greatly loved by all who knew her and will be missed for evermore.

Those thankful for having shared her life include her children: Ann (Lawrence) Bohlen of Collidge, Az., Lawrence W. (Nina) Gersema of El Paso, Texas, Dale R. (Pat) Gersema of Lubbock, Texas; her grandchildren: Shari Bohlen, Nila Newton, Cindi Haley, Jan Copeland, Sandra St. Germain and David Howe; twelve great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, and one sister: Effie Abben of Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wierd Gerseman, on Nov. 22, 1995, two grandsons: Kenneth D. Gersema and Douglas R. Gersema; her parents, five brothers: Dick, Ed, Ralph, Ben and Gephard; and five sisters: Hattie, Geraldine, Minnie, Johanna and Kathryn.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Lottie Gersema Memorial Fund in care of the family.
