Leona E. Sylvester-Abram, 86, of 807 5th St., Charles City, died Monday afternoon, September 22, 2003, at the Salsbury Baptist Home, Charles City. Graveside Services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, September 25, at Riverside Cemetery, Charles City, with Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. Those wishing to extend memorials or an expression of sympathy may direct them to the family.
Leona Elizabeth Abram was born January 15, 1917, in Rockford, Iowa, to Charles E. and Esther M. (Zimmer) Steele. She was one of seven children. On October 19, 1935, Leona was united in marriage to Martin H. Sylvester at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Leona had lived most all of her life in Charles City. She was employed as a Dietary Aide with the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City until retiring in 1980. Leona attended St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church and was a part of the Rachel Church Circle. Leona's interest and leisure activities included tending to her flowers, gardening, crochet, cooking and baking delightful meals for family and friends.
Those grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in her life are her son, Ron Sylvester and his wife, Judy of Denver, Iowa; daughter, Delores Griffin of Charles City; sister, Violet Corbin of Oelwein; brother, Wallace Steele and his wife, Genevieve of Ham Lake, Minn.; daughter-in-law, Sharon Jorgensen of Clear Lake; eight grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Leona will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Martin Sylvester in 1965 and W.R. 'Ray' Abram in 1984; her son Gary Sylvester; granddaughter, Sherri Cosgriff; three brothers, Darrel, Ray and Clyde and one sister, Mina Smith.
