Hazel Schmidt, 81, a former resident of 708 7th Avenue, Charles City, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Hazel Schmidt will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Rev. Dennis Niezwaag, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, and at the church on Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, an hour prior to the services.

Hazel Arlene Schmidt was born Nov. 18, 1921, at Kansas City, Kan., the daughter of Fred and Alma (Thurman) Schaer. She graduated from the Wapello High School, received her Bachelor's Degree from the University of Northern Iowa, and her Master's Degree from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo. Hazel served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946. During her career, she taught schools in Scott County, Burlington, and then was at Lincoln School in Charles City from 1955 to 1985. Hazel was a member of the National Education Association, Iowa State Education Association, Phi Delta Kappa, Business and Professional Women, American Association University Women, Rachel Circle, Elks Club, and the American Legion.

Living family members include a son, Craig (Pam) Schmidt of Charles City; a daughter, Linda (Daryl) Ellison of Shakopee, Minn.; and four grandchildren, Corey and Cole Schmidt, and Lindsey and Andrew Ellison.

Her husband preceded her in death on May 16, 1991.

Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City is in charge of arrangements.
