VIOLA MAE JOHNSON

CANORA, Saskatchewan, Canada - Viola Mae (Garber) Johnson, 79, died Saturday (Dec. 18, 1999) at Gateway Lodge, Canora, Saskatchewan.

Viola was born July 30, 1920, in Marble Rock, the daughter of Guy and Zoe Garber. She received her schooling and graduated from Marble Rock High School in 1938.

She married Oswald J. Johnson on July 31, 1940, in Mason City. For the first several years they worked on a farm near Blue Earth, Minn. During that time, their son, Carlyle Edward, was born ('46). In 1950 they moved back to Northern Iowa near Riceville and McIntire. There they first rented a farm for two or three years before purchasing a farm near McIntire. Then in 1961, they moved to a farm near Ionia. In 1964, they moved to Rudd where they operated an egg produce business for 17 years. Then they moved to Valley City, N.D., where they managed a Super 8 Motel for two years, then they moved to Grafton, N.D., in March of 1980 to manage the Super 8 Motel there. After Oswald died in May of 1981, Viola managed the motel on her own until she retired and moved back to their condominium in Valley City. In August of 1985, she moved up to Torquay, Sasakatchewan, Canada, to be closer to her son and his family.

In 1995 she was diagnosed with dementia - possibly Alzheimer's. She moved to the Care Centre at Midale, Saskatchewan, in July of 1995 for temporary placement. She was then transferred to Lampman, Saskatchewan, in December of 1995 as a permanent resident. There she lived until Carlyle and his family moved up to Preeceville, Saskatchewan, in September of 1995. At that time she was able to be admitted to the Gateway Lodge in Canora, Saskatchewan, until her death.

No matter where she lived she was involved in the church, doing her share of serving, quilting and studies. She loved crocheting, crafting and sewing; and she loved doing many things for and being with her two grandchildren. When she was in Iowa, she also enjoyed 10-pin bowling.

Surviving are her son, the Rev. Carlyle Johnson and his wife, Laureen and their children, Sarah and Janelle, of Preeceville, Sask.; only one brother, Floyd and his wife, Marion and their family of Charles City; several nieces and nephews; and one aunt, Gila Merfeld, of Charles City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Oswald, two brothers, Ora and Ulyssess, and a sister in law, Lorette.

Funeral services were held on Dec. 22 at St. John/North Prairie Lutheran Church in Preeceville, Saskatchewan, Canada, and on Dec. 27 at Torquay Trinity Lutheran Church in Torquay, Sasakatchewan, Canada. Committal services were held Dec. 29 at Sunny Side Memory Gardens in Charles City.
