CHARLES CITY, IOWA — John “J.W.” Walter, 80, of Charles City, died after a courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday (Sept. 20, 2005) at his son’s home surrounded by his family.

A funeral Mass for John Walter will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City with the Rev. Carl Ries celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in St. James, Minn.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main in Charles City, with a vigil Scriptural wake service at 5:30 p.m. and the Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the Mass on Friday at the church.

John Francis Walter was born on June 18, 1925, in New Ulm, Minn., the son of Edward and Anna (Bregel) Walter. He grew up in rural Fairfax, Minn., where he attended Fairfax High School.

After high school, he moved to St. James, Minn., where he worked on his Uncle’s (“Doc” Bregel) farm. During this time he met Arleen A. Neuman. They were married at St. James Catholic Church on Feb. 11, 1947. In 1945, he went to work at Tony Downs Foods Co. in St. James. He was hired as a truck driver and through his 33 years of employment with Tony Downs Foods, he was a supervisor, plant manager and purchasing agent. During the last few years of his employment with Tony Downs, he and Arleen fulfilled their dream and bought a small establishment in Pemberton, Minn., which they called The J.W. Bar. They sold the bar in 1983.

After his employment with Tony Downs, he went to work with his son, Michael, at All States Quality Foods in Charles City, where he was in charge of purchasing and shipping. He retired from All States in 2002. John was a hard-working man who in his spare time enjoyed spending time at his cabin at Long Lake and his son’s house at Lake of The Ozarks, golfing, boating, playing cribbage, bowling and attending sporting events of his grandchildren.

Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his wife and children, grandchildren, his great-grandchild and his many, many friends. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Frozen Foods Organization.

John is survived by his son, Michael (Carol) Walter of Charles City; a daughter, Angela (Tony) Sokolofsky of Ormsby, Minn.; grandchildren, Christina (Aaron) Hoeft of Liberty, Mo., Ryan Walter of Kansas City, Mo., Adam Walter of Iowa City, Alexandra Walter of Iowa City, Katie Saunders and Kristoffer Saunders of Ormsby, Minn.; a great- granddaughter, Daley Hoeft; three sisters: Delores Hayes, of Prior Lake, Minn., Lucille Urdesich of Minnetonka, Minn., Mary Lou Reiser of Long Lake, Minn.; a brother, Howard Walter of Faribault, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; wife, Arleen, on Oct. 24, 1990; a daughter, Julie Miller; and many other relatives.

“J.W.,” as many people called him, was a truly dedicated family man and friend. He touched more lives than he ever knew and will be missed dearly by everyone who know him.

God Bless You, J.W.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa Charles City site, 1003 Gilbert St., Charles City, IA 50616.
