Maxine Wanda Stegen Vokes was born November 14, 1921, at Decorah, Iowa, the daughter of Hans and Ruth (Mickle) Stegen. She graduated from Postville High School.

On August 24, 1940, she was united in marriage to Dean Vokes at Charles City, Iowa. They moved to Floyd in 1973 where they have remained. She worked for several years with food service at several of the elementary schools in Charles City as “lunch lady.” Maggie was a great support for Dean as he served as mayor of Floyd for 24 years. She was the “woman behind the mayor”. Many of the Floyd residents will remember how she and Dean always had candy ready when they stopped after school.

She was a member of the UAW Ladies Auxiliary. Her interests included extensive traveling and playing bingo. Maggie’s family was always first in her life and she took every opportunity to spend time with them and share with them through the years. They will always be remembered as a very loving and devoted couple that always loved and supported each other all through their 65 years of marriage.

Living family members include her husband, Delbert “Dean” Vokes of Floyd, Iowa; three children, William “Bill” (Janet) Vokes of Floyd and their three children, Deanna (Duane) Alcott of Sheffield, Iowa, and their three children, Judy (Eric) Lien of Rockford, Iowa, and her three children; 30 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; a brother, Mike (Jan) Stegen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and three sisters, Marge (Kenny) Euwing of Waukon, Iowa, Gladys Romeo of Wisconsin, and Ardell Sullivan of Charles City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Leland Stegen and a sister, Lila Dishon.
