Karl Herbrecht Klages was born April 30, 1918, at Charles City, the son of John and Ella (Herbrechtsmeyer) Klages. He graduated from the Charles City High School in 1936. For a brief time Karl worked as a realtor and broker before joining his father and brother with their farm operation.

On August 1, 1987, he was united in marriage to Francys Nikolas at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They farmed on the Klages family farm until his death. He is a member of the Elks Lodge and a 55 year member of the Masonic Lodge. Karl enjoyed politics and playing the stock market. He was a farmer at heart, raised Suffolk sheep and collected toy and full sized tractors.

Living family members include his wife, Francys Klages of Charles City; four step children, Wilma (John) Pulfer of Phoenix, Arizona, Sharon (Duane) McIntyre of Overland Park, Kansas, Dale (Jan) Ferch of Kechi, Kansas, and Michael (Megan) Ferch of Brooklyn, New York; seven step grandchildren; nine step great grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy (Jack) Weaver of Fargo, North Dakota.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a step son, David Ferch, and a brother, Ralph Klages.
