Harold Carlson, 87, of Rockford, Floyd county, Iowa, died Tuesday, October 31, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City, Cerro Gordo county, Iowa.

Harold Howard Carlson was born on June 19, 1919, in Hadley, Minnesota, the son of Soren and Gertrude (Effamsen) Carlson. His parents were direct immigrants of Denmark and moved to Marietta, Minnesota, where Harold graduated from the Marietta High School in 1937.

His father owned several creameries and Harold worked with his father in the business until he went to college. He graduated from Iowa State University in Ames in 1939 with a degree in Dairy Industries.

On December 31, 1941, Harold was united in marriage to Neola Marie Slininger and to this union three children were born: Sharon, Tom and Bruce. Neola passed away in November of 1969.

Harold was inducted into the Army Air Force on July 10, 1942 and received an honorable discharge on November 19, 1945. He returned home to Marietta to again work in the dairy business with his father until he became the creamery manager in Rockford. When the creamery closed, Harold and Neola operated the local drug store in Rockford. The store had the towns only soda fountain and he became known as Zeke to the locals. Nearly every child in the area was treated to some kind of ice cream/soda concoction at the counter. Harold and Neola sold the drug store and moved to Mason City where he became the ice cream maker for Birdsalls.

Harold was united in marriage on November 5, 1970, to Marcella (Drury) Carlson and embraced her three children into his life: Janice, Deanna, and Marilyn. He took up golfing at the age of 60 and it became his passion. Weather permitting, he golfed nearly every day until this past season, when his health prevented him from hitting the course. He had a life long love of music, playing the trombone in the Marietta Community Band as they traveled from town to town on hayracks in the 1930s. He loved Big Band Music, dancing, traveling, playing cards and spending time with family. Until his health prevented it, he was an announcer at KCMR. He was active in his church and community, serving on boards and committees throughout his adult life.

Harold is survived by his wife of nearly 36 years, Marcella; six children, Sharon (Earl) Gwin, Tom Carlson, Janice (Russell) Kornegor, Deanna (Jim) Mallo, Bruce (Terry) Carlson, and Marilyn (Charles) Johnson; 16 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; three sisters, Eva (Paul) Ruud, Ruth (Lyle) Olson, Martha (Dennis) Hatfield; and a sister-in-law, Jane (David) Carlson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Neola; and three brothers, Art, Carl and David.

The Hauser Funeral Home, (641) 228-2323, www.hauserfh.com , in Charles City, is in charge of arrangements.
