Mary Calkins, 81, of Charles City, died Thursday, June 15, 2006, at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Mary Cordelia Diederich Calkins was born August 30, 1924, at New Hampton, the daughter of Michael and Theresa (Dumelle) Diederich. She graduated from the New Hampton High School.

On September 19, 1946 she was united in marriage to Richard Calkins at Chicago, Illinois. In 1948 they moved to rural Charles City where they were engaged in farming. Mary was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Happy Hour Club. Her hobbies included playing cards, gardening, bird watching, traveling and reading.

Living family members include three children, Shirley (Richard) DeVries of Mabelton, Ga., Janice (Richard) Dehn of Cordova, Tex., and Martin (Sharon) Calkins of Salix; seven grandchildren; several great and great great grandchildren; a sister, Helen (Robert) Hild of Evansdale; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Weiglein of Ionia.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Richard on June 5, 2000; a daughter, Sharon Calkins; a step grandson, Michael Petersen; three brothers, Leo Diederich, and Frank and Joe Weiglein; and two sisters, Rose Diedrich and Theresa Hedrick.
