Margaret M Holland, 89, of Charles City, died Friday, March 2, 2007, at the Colonial Manor in Elma.

Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek and Reverend Carl Ries will concelebrate the Mass. Inurnment will be at a later date in Calvary Cemetery.

Margaret was born on March 20, 1917, near Floyd, Floyd county, Iowa, the daughter of Dennis and Grace Leslie Drumm Holland. She graduated from Floyd High School in 1933 and then moved to the outskirts of Charles City. She graduated from Iowa State Teachers’ College with a BA degree in 1949. Graduate work was pursued at the University of Northern Iowa and the University of Iowa. She taught in Floyd County rural schools for nine years, Floyd School for two years and at Charles City Junior High School from 1949 to 1982.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, serving there as lector and member of St. Theresa Circle, the Rosary Society, and the Parish Council. She was a life member of the National Education Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, the American Association of University Women, and the Floyd County Historical Association.

She was a charter member of the Charles City Arts Association and the Iowa Phi Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa. She served twelve years on the Charles City Public Library Board and was a member of the Charles City Women’s Club. She was a member of the Heritage Club and loved to travel but always remarked that her favorite part of the trip was opening her own back door on return to Charles City.

Margaret touched the lives of many young people as she taught 8th grade English in Room 222 at the Junior High School for 33 years. She enlivened the classroom with a daily “Jumbles” activity from the Des Moines Register. She had many and varied interests and talents but remained an eternal amateur. She loved to have guests in her home and her favorite people were those who would stay to share a meal with her. Special childhood memories include time spent with her brother and three cousins.

Margaret is survived by cousins, Mrs. Marjorie (Holland) Reed, by Richard Bennett and his daughters Mrs. Michael (Maria) Westfall and Nancy Bennett of Woodbury, Minn., and Sr. M. Cephas Wichman, RSM and John McAleer. She was welcomed into several family circles particularly the Dorothy “Dot” Halbach family. Special friends with whom she shared were Sister Mary Angela Feeney, PBVM of Dubuque and Steve Culbertson of Alaska, a favorite student.

Margaret appreciated the helpfulness of Angie Smith and Ray and Donna Murray over the past several years.

Margaret was preceded in death by her mother in 1940 and her father in 1956, her brother, Robert, in 1939, and cousins including Jean Holland in 1998 and Mrs. Richard (Bette) Bennett in 2003.

In lieu of flowers memorial may be directed to the Immaculate Conception Grade School, 106 Chapel Lane Charles City, IA 50616.
