Harlan "Beans" Behnke, 90, lifelong resident of Charles City, died Tuesday, January 2, 2007, at the Shell Rock Healthcare Center in Shell Rock, after a short illness.

Harlan Homer Behnke was born September 7, 1916, the son of Roy and Nettie (Young) Behnke at Charles City. He attended school in Charles City. Much of his youth was spent at the home of his Uncle and Aunt, Walter and Plooma Behnke on their farm in rural Greene.

On June 21, 1941 he was united in marriage to Bernice Marie Hicks at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Charles City, by Reverend Fritchell. He was employed by Oliver Corporation for 42 years. After his retirement he worked part-time at the Charles City Mall. Harlan enjoyed watching all athletic events especially Charles City High School Girls Softball. He always looked forward to spending time with his wife and family.

Living family members include his wife, Bernice Behnke of Charles City; his son, Larry (Dianne) Behnke of Waverly; one grandson, Cameron Behnke of Waterloo; one granddaughter, Jennifer (Ryan) Buhr of Denver; one great-grandson, Blaine Buhr; and one great-granddaughter, Olivia Buhr.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Gwendolyn Miller.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 South Main Street, Charles City, IA 50616.
