Marcella Howe, 84, of Nora Springs, died Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs.

A funeral Mass for Marcella Howe will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Reverend Brian Shepley will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday where the Rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. and a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the Mass.

Marcella Elaine Hofler Howe was born June 4, 1924, at Nora Springs, the daughter of Edward and Grace (Forbes) Hofler. She graduated from the Nora Springs High School and Hamilton Business College. On Jan. 4, 1947, she was united in marriage to Robert E. Howe at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. They farmed for many years southwest of Charles City. Marcella also worked for a time as a Medical Secretary at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital. After Robert’s death on Aug. 10, 1983, Marcella remained on the farm for a time and later moved to Nora Springs. For the past 22 years she would spend periods of time at her daughter’s home but always returned to Nora Springs which she called her “summer home”. Marcella was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Theresa Circle and served for many years as an election official for Floyd County. She enjoyed watching Hawkeye sports and college basketball in general, and took an active interest in the politics of the day. Marcella appreciated sharing her life with her grandchildren and attending their sporting and scholastic events.

Living family members include three children, Jerry Howe of Iowa City, Dr. Colleen (Dr. Jose Pulido) Howe of Rochester, Minn., and Maureen “Mo” Howe of Iowa City; four grandchildren, Jason and Brian Howe, and Jose and Christine Pulido; two great grandchildren; four sisters, Patricia Little of Erie, Pa, Frances Christiansen of St. Ansgar, Aline (Bob) Sutton of Medford, Ore., and Anita Gerk of Mason City; many cherished nieces and nephews; and her Austrian family. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; an infant son; and a son Michael Howe.
