Thelma Paulus, age 99, of Charles City, Floyd County, Iowa, died on Saturday, August 9, 2008, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.
A funeral Mass for Thelma Paulus will be held on Wednesday, August 13, 2008, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Thelma Katherine Krapp was born Oct. 20, 1908, in Rockford, the daughter of Nicholas and Susie (Heinz) Krapp. She graduated from the Rockford High School, North Iowa Area Community College and Wartburg College. On July 8, 1927, she was united in marriage to Philip Paulus at Holy Name Catholic Church in Rockford. They moved to Charles City in 1960. Thelma was an elementary school teacher beginning in rural schools then at Colwell, Allison and the Immaculate Conception School in Charles City retiring in 1974. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Joseph’s Circle, Rosary Society, Heritage Club and the Senior Citizens.
Thelma enjoyed doing various crafts and will be remembered for the many afghans she crocheted and gave as gifts. She was also the “neighborhood grandma” as she took care of children as their parents went on errands. Thelma had a great desire to increase her learning and did that in various ways.
Living family members include two daughters, Marlys Crabtree of Charles City and Shirley (Delbert) Stadtlander of Mason City; four grandchildren, Gary (Barb) Schmidt, Daniel (Chris) Schmidt, Scott Stadtlander and Sheri (Mike) Voortmann; seven great grandchildren; and two sisters, Cecelia Mott of Mason City and Loretta Park of Rockwell.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on April 4, 1981; two sisters, Helen Paulus and Marcella Spurrier; and two sons-in-law, Herbert Schmidt and Robert Crabtree.
