Mayme was born on Dec. 11, 1919, one of five children, to Gustave Frank and Augusta F. (Krumrey) Meyers at Bassett, Iowa. She attended school there and later took dietary courses at Iowa State University at Ames.

She was united in marriage to Wayne Edward Swant on Mar. 6, 1939, at Austin, Minn. To this union was born one son. For the next 42 years they farmed together near Charles City. She also worked at Floyd County Memorial Hospital as a cook for eight and one half years, retiring in 1978. Mayme was a former member of the Ladies of the Moose, the "500" Double Dozen Card group, and the Navy Mothers. She and Wayne loved to travel in their trailers, which she called her dollhouses, spending 10 years wintering in Texas and the last six months in Arizona. She enjoyed reading and swapping romance books with her daughter-in-law, fishing, working with her flowers and canning and freezing her vegetables. When asked what her favorite thing to do was, she replied, "I love to cook". Her cooking abilities lent themselves to many types of foods. She received Personality of the Month at the hospital for her specialty of baking pies.
