Raymond W. Ellis, 73, a retired partner in a Boston law firm, died Sunday in his son's home in Greenwich, Conn.
Born in Charles City, Iowa, he was graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy and Yale University before earning his bachelor of laws degree from Harvard Law School.
Mr. Ellis was a partner with Choate Hall & Stewart, a law firm in Boston, for more than 35 years before retiring last year.
During World War II, he served in the Pacific as an air combat intelligence officer on the staff of Adm. Felix Stump, and was awarded the Bronze Star.
A member of the American, Massachusetts and Essex County Bar associations, he had served as trustee of Phillips Exeter Academy, where he had also been president of the General Alumni Assn.
Mr. Ellis was a member of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland, the Mid-Ocean Club in Bermuda, the Myopia Hunt Club, the Eastern Yacht Club and the Navy League.
He leaves a daughter, Mina E. Otis of Dover; three sons, Charles D. of Greenwich, Conn., Barnes H. of Lake Oswego, Ore. and Melvin W. Ellis of Medfield; and 10 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 28, at 11 a.m. in St. Michael's Church, Marblehead.
