DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS
Charles E. Chenoweth, captain, 363d Infantry. For extraordinary heroism in action in the forest of Argonne, France, September 29-30, 1918. At the time when troops on the left had retired, Capt. Chenoweth, with his company, covered the left flank of his division and thus prevented an attack by the enemy upon its flank. After being severely wounded, he remained at his post until he had issued the necessary orders for holding the position he had seized.
