R. A. Knight, MD (1904-1966)
Russell Austin Knight, born in Centerville, Kansas, of Faye ad Goldie (Mundell) Knight, graduated from Mound City Kansas High School and entered junior college at Fort Scott in that state. He received his MD degree from the University of Kansas in 1931, and after his internship at Broadlawn Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, he came to Rockford on November 1, 1933. On the twelfth of that month he married Mary Loring. His practice at Rockford was interrupted from 1942 to 1945 when he joined the U.S. Naval Reserve and spent 22 months overseas. Although he was Rockford's only physician during those 30 odd years and not a native son, he was a true pillar of the community and, perhaps, a model representative of the pioneer in modern Rockford. His death, April 28, 1966, brought a deeply felt loss of a good physician and a good man.
