John C. Sanders

Unfortunately little is known about John C. Sanders, who came to Rockford in 1898 and was superintendent of schools for the next seven years. He did a great deal for not only Rockford's schools but also for the community at large. He organized school sports - especially football teams and girls' basketball - and both a high school and town band. He re-vitalized the dramatics department of the high school and conducted numerous local talent plays. Moreover, his general interest in promoting Rockford persisted, even after he left in 1905 for Fort Madison, Iowa, where he became a warden in the state penitentary.
