Joseph William Wood, of whose death
we made brief mention in our last
issue, was buried in the Oelwein cemetery
Friday afternoon, followed by a
large concourse of people. The I. O. O. F.
lodge, M. W. of A. Camp and the
fire department took part, the I. O. O. F.
lodge taking charge of the ceremony.
The Episcopal church not being
large enough the funeral services
were held in the M. E. church, Rev.
Knox, of the Episcopal church, officiating,
of which church Mr. Wood was a
member. He leaves a widow and five
children to mourn his loss. Mr. Wood
carried insurance to the amount of
$4,700; $2,000 in the M, W. of A., $1,500
in the I. O. 0. F. and $1,200 in the People
Accident Association.
Joseph William Wood was born May
6th, 1852, at Paragon Place, Beraondsey.
in the county of Surrey, England.
On December 24th, 1881. he was united
in marriage to Clara Sabina Wilde, in
the Episcopal church at Sheffield,
Yorkshire, England. While in Sheffield
Mr. Wood followed his trade as a
carriage, wagon and coach builder. In
1887 he left England and went to Ignace,
in the Province of Ontario, Canada,
-where he was inspector on the
Canadian Pacific Railway; while here
he-was joined by his wife and children
who came to him from England. Later,
Mr. Wood moved from Ignace to Fort
Williams, Ontario, Canada, where he
followed his trade along with house
building. In 1891 he went to St. Paul,
Minn., but soon afterward moved to
Oelwein, where he has since resided.
He was the father of eight children, of
whom five and his widow survive him.
