John Almer Thompson was born on the 3rd day of May, 1854 in Carrol county, Ohio. His parents were Morriss G. and Sarah (Brown) Thompson. In 1855 when he was less than one year old his parents moved to Fayette county, Iowa, and in consequence he is numbered among its early settlers. Until seventeen years of age he spent his time in the district school and at work on his father’s farm. At that age he commenced his career in the mercantile life. Having clerked for Fred Gliene, O. H. Osborne and Amos Rittenhouse he imbarked{sic} in business for himself and built up a prosperous business. On the 27th day of May, 1875, Mr. Thompson led to the marriage altar Anna D., the daughter of James and Caroline Carroll. Unto them has been born six children, James M. and Geo. S. of Burr Oak, Harry of Cedar Rapids, Arch. of Denver, Colo., Mrs. Mabel Hall of Austin, Minn., and Dolly S., who died in 1892 at Arlington. All of his life was spent in Fayette county except seven years he made his home in Burr Oak, where he resided at the time of his death, which occurred on Feb. 26, 1914. He leaves to mourn his loss an aged father and mother, three sisters and five brothers besides his immediate family. He was a kind father and a loving husband and of a very generous disposition.
