Charles Hugh Harkin was born near Fayette, Iowa, February 23, 1865; and died Novemeber 17, 1917, at his home in Arlington, Iowa, at the age of 52 years, 8 months and 24 days. He spent most of his life in Fayette county. He was a home lover and a home builder. In the year 1885 he moved to Obrien Co., with his parents, but four years later in 1889, he returned to Fayette Co. On February 13, 1890 he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Riechers; to this union were born four children of which two preceded the father in death, they having died in infancy. For the welfare of his home folk Mr. Harkin planned and labored. Four years ago he retired from farm life and moved to Arlington. He leaves to mourn his early departure, his wife, his son Lloyd, his daugher Nellie, his aged mother, Mrs. Andrew Harkin of Sheldon, Ia., three brothers; Will Harkin of Sioux Falls, S.Dak.; Dick Harkin and George Harkin of Sheldon, Iowa; and four sisters, Mrs. G.R. Gage, or Fayette, Iowa; Mrs. R.R. Nash, of Waterloo, Iowa; Mrs. Mary Henrich, Wadena, Iowa; and Mrs. Rose Penfield of Steele, N. Dak., as well as many other relatives and friends.

"Dangers stand thick thru all the ground,
To push us to the tomb;
And fierce diseases wait around
To hurry mortals home."
But, "There is a land where beauty cannot fade,
Nor sorrow dim the eye;
Where true love shall not droop nor
be dismayed,
And none shall ever die."

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday morning at the Church of Christ in Arlington by Rev. J.B. Ackman, pastor of the M.E. church. The popularity of the deceased while in life was favorably reflected by the large concourse of friends and former neighbors attending these services. Internment was made in Union Cemetery where the local order of the Modern Woodman, of which he was a member, had charge of the remains.
