Contributor: Connie Ellis (transcriber)Hugo Henry Bodensteiner, age 90, the son of Joseph C. Bodensteiner and Margaret M.(Drilling) Bodensteiner, was born February 3, 1912 in St. Lucas, Iowa. He died Sunday, December 29, 2002, at the Palmer Lutheran Health Center at West Union, Iowa.
In 1926 Hugo graduated from the eighth grade at Ossian de Sales Catholic School in Ossian, Iowa. He served in the United States Navy from 1933 to 1937 and was stationed in San Diego, California. Hugo married Ruth Elizabeth Sherwood on April 3, 1937 in San Diego. After leaving the military service, Hugo returned with his family to Earlville,Iowa where he owned and operated a blacksmith shop. In 1942 they moved to West Des Moines, Iowa where he taught welding at a vocational school, worked for Solar Aircraft, and owned a manufacturing company. In 1959 he and Ruth moved the family to a farm near Postville, Iowa. In 1978, he and Ruth retired to their home in Clermont, Iowa.
Hugo was an active member of the St.Peter's Catholic Church in Clermont, the Tri-City Country Club at Luana, and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, and playing pinochle and bridge.
Hugo Henry Bodensteiner is survived by his eleven children: H.Kenneth (Sharon) Bodensteiner of Anchorage, Alaska, Anita Gogerty of Norwalk, Iowa, Robert (Sue) Bodensteiner of Seattle, Washington, Jeanne (Mike) Noonan of Peosta, Iowa, Donald Bodensteiner of Iowa City, Iowa, Edward (Francesca) Bodensteiner of Saltillo, Mexico, David (Carol) Bodensteiner of West Des Moines, Iowa, Rosemary Bodensteiner of Clermont, Iowa, Marilyn (Steve) Graber of Kansas City, Missouri, Allen (Glenda) Bodensteiner of Postville, Iowa, and Anthony Bodensteiner of Coralville, Iowa. There are 22 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his four brothers and four sisters: M.J. Bodensteiner of San Juan Capistrano, California, Agnes Winter of Earlville, Iowa, Evelyn Hawkins of Ossian, Iowa, Lucille Fanning of Timonium, Maryland, Leo (Nadine) Bodensteiner of Iowa Falls, Iowa, Reverend Peter Bodensteiner of Lawler, Iowa, Olivia Ward Everett of Fayette, Iowa, Cletus Bodensteiner of Long Beach, California, and many nieces and nephews.
Hugo was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ruth, two brothers Chris and Leonard, and a daughter-in-law Anne. Burial was in the St. Peter Catholic Church Cemetery in Clermont, Iowa.
