DEATH OF O. W. ROGERS.
The First White Child Born Within the Precincts of what is now West Union.
An announcement in the columns of the West Union Gazette of the 18th causes great surprise. It is, that Oscar W. Rogers, son of ex-Judge Jacob W. Rogers, died at a sanitarium in Martinsville, Ind., on the l5th. Mr. Rogers was on his way to West Union, two months ago, for the purpose of making experiments in which he was greatly interested as an inventor, when he was taken ill and halted at the sanitarium where he died. Deceased was born in West Union Oct. 2, 1850. There he grew to manhood; acquired an education, became a lawyer, made a fortune by inventive ability, and was believed to be grandly equipped in that line of industry In a brief account of this death preliminary to a more perfect obituary, the Gazette says:—
At this time we cannot say all that deserves to be said of this remarkable man. He had vast plans for the future of himself that embodied great benefits to all mankind.
But be can never realize the fruition of his noble ambition. Disease and death have combined to deprive him of this. But the busy, strenuous years of his later life were not in vain. The plans and purposes in which he sacrificed so much are preserved in the hearts and minds of men he loved, who are capable and willing to forward to their highest perfection the interests he held so dear.
