DAY HEISERMAN KILLED
--
First West Union Boy to be Reported
Killed in Action in France
Death Occurred Oct. 9.
----
The people in West Union and vicinity were shocked Friday evening when the message came from Washington D.C., announcing the death on Oct. 9, of Ellsworth Day Heiserman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Heiserman of West Union. Day was the first West Union boy to be reported "killed in action". Although the report of his death came as a blow to his parents, they are proud of the fact that he was with the 117th Infantry, the first American Unit to pierce the Hindenburg line. Day left West Union Feb 22, as a volunteer with a contingent of drafted men. He went from here to Camp Dodge and sailed for France in June. His parents received a letter from him recently, written a few days before the battle. When the armistice was signed, they, like all other parents who have sons in France, were counting the days when their boy would be home, and were waiting anxiously for anther letter from him.

Ellsworth Day, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Heiserman, was born on the farm south of West Union where he spent all his life until he entered the military service. He attended the West Union schools, after which he operated the farm for his father. He is survived by his parents and one brother, Ray Heiserman of Sturgis Sask. The sympathy of a host of friends is extended to the family in their bereavement.
