Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)A funeral mass was held on Tuesday August 9, 2016 for Loretta J. Corkery. age 83, at the Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union, Iowa. Rev. Jim Brokman was the Celebrant, Sue Niemann was the organist and interment was in the Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery in West Union, Iowa. Loretta died on August 5, 2016 at the Gundersen Palmer Lutheran Health Center.
Loretta Jane was born on January 3, 1933 on a farm a half mile north of Buck Creek, Iowa to Leo and Berdina (Weiskirch) Staack. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, rural Sumner, Iowa. Loretta spent her early years in Sumner but later spent winters in St. Petersburg, Florida until her father's untimely death when she was 14 years old. Her mother later remarried Carl Westendorf of Sumner, Iowa. Loretta graduated from the Sumner High School in 1950 and attended Gates Business College in Waterloo, Iowa for two years.
In 1954 she was united in marriage to Robert John Corkery of rural Sumner, Iowa and to that union they were blessed with five children. Loretta spent her years working for Interstate Power Company until she retired. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends,playing cards and volunteering.
Loretta is survived by her children: Cheryl Ann Cook of Waterloo, James Paul (Dorothy) Corkery of West Union, Janice Kay Sage of Ankeny, Iowa, and Jean Alane (Lee) Barness of West Union, Iowa. Loretta treasured her time with her children and celebrated the lives of her nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her two sisters Ramona McFarland of St. Louis, Missouri and Ilene (Robert) Meyer of Sumner, Iowa along with two step-siblings Eldon (Marilyn) Westendorf of Waverly, Iowa and Marlys Kedding of Long Grove, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents and step-father; and her son Michael Robert Corkery who died in infancy.
