Earl W. Kiple 1896-1974

Earl W. Kiple, son of Noah W. Kiple and Bertha nee Kohler, was born March 21st, 1896, in Elgin, Iowa. He attended the public school and worked in and about Elgin for a number of years then enlisted in the United States Armed Forces during World War I on Dec. 10, 1917 and was stationed in Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. Later he served overseas in the 309th Aero Squadron in France.

After the Armistice he was honorably discharged and returned home to marry Esther Reusser, December 29th, 1920.

Earl and Esther began operating several farms in the Elgin vicinity before settling down on their own farm several miles southwest of Elgin. In 1962 they retired from farming and moved to Elgin. He worked at various tasks after retiring, such as field man for the Elgin Canning Company, and doing assessment of property for the County.

Following many years of service on the Town Council, Earl was elected mayor of Elgin during which time he was taken seriously ill. He was a charter member of the American Legion, holding the office of Adjutant General for 39 years.

The Kiples were active members of the congregation of the First Baptist Church of Elgin. He served as President of the Senior Citizen's Club.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Ester; his parents; a sister, Elda; and a brother L.L. Kiple. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Nelle Reusser, and Mrs. Flossie Howard; nieces and nephews, and many friends.

Earl was a man of many virtues with a cheerful disposition and always ready and willing to lend a helping hand.

The memorial services were held Thursday, August 1st, 1974, at 2:00 o'clock at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Ralph Chandler.

Elgin Legion Post No. 352 was in charge of graveside services.

Pall bearers were Darol Wilson, Jacob Schneider, Ivan Torkelson, Robert Moore, LaVerne R. Larson and Robert D. Wilson. A quartet consisted of Hugo Hackmann, Carlton Krueger, Kenton Krueger and Harry Johnson.
