Halver Oli Blockhus, 1865-1950

West Union - Halver Oli Blockhus, son of Marie and Ole Blockhus, was born March 9, 1865, at Bergen, Norway. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and received his education in Norway. When 19 years of age, he came to the United States and settled in this vicinity as a farmer.

On Sept. 19, 1891, he was united in marriage to Jorgina Gilbert, Elgin. To this union were born ten children, six girls and four boys, Anna, Mrs. Paul Hammond, Oelwein; Clara, Mrs. Fred Weitenhagen, Agnes, Mrs. Carl Stendel, Josephine, Mrs. Raymond Drewes, all of West Union; Gladys, Mrs Dale Monnahan, Cedar Rapids; Elmer, Joe, Louie and Ervie, all of West Union.

In 1935, Mr and Mrs Blockhus left the farm and moved to West Union. On Sept. 17. 1941, they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

Mrs Blockhus preceded her husband in death in August, 1948. Besides his children, he is survived by 19 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; a brother, Sven Blockhus, Elgin, and a sister, Mrs. Laruara Berg.

Funeral service was conducted July 13 from the Elmer Blockhus home and St. Olaf Lutheran Church, and interment was in the West Union cemetery.
