OBITUARIES.
WALTER ASH Jr. OF CHARLES CITY DIES

Funeral services for Walter Ash Jr., 84, Charles City, formerly of West Union, were held Monday, Feb. 10, at 10:30 a.m. in Bethel Presbyterian Church with Rev. Galen Smith officiating. Burial was in the West Union Cemetery.

Walter died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, in his Charles City home, following a short illness.

Burnham-Wood Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Walter was born Aug. 9, 1918, in West Union, to Walter and Lena (Appelman) Ash. He attended the Rolling Green and Fayette Community Schools. He married Helen Miller on Sept. 20, 1941, at the United Methodist Church at Cresco. They worked at the Burlington Munitions Plant for one year then moved to the West Union area where they farmed for 30 years. After retirement from farming Walter and his wife moved to Charles City, where he worked as a custodian in an apartment complex for 10 years. He was currently working at the Wildwood Golf Course.

His parents, a daughter, Judy Knight; two brothers, Herbert and Alfred; and three sisters, Eva Medberry, Marjorie Holtzman and Leta Barrett preceded him in death.

Walter is survived by his wife, Helen; one son, Wally (Julie) Ash of Charles City; two daughters, Marlys (Jim) Gerleman of Charles City and Marcia (Ron) Frey of Bentonville, Ark.; a sister, Dorothy Medberry of Elgin; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
