Waucoma Sentinel, May 31, 1917

Mary Jane Stone, daughter of James and Catharine Stone, was born May 9, 1841, at Warrensburg, New York. In 1844 she came with her parents to Illinois where they settled near Chicago. Six years later the family moved to Eden township. For many years her father operated the mill at Eden. Her record of sixty-five years continuous residence in this township probably is equaled by few.

She was married to Thomas H. Kaufman Dec 20, 1855. To this union two sons were born, Warren, who died when about two years old, and James W. who survives his mother. Her husband fought during the Civil War, being a member of the 9th Iowa Cavalry. It was her part to stay in Iowa and care for the family. Who can say which was the greater service? Mr. Kaufman died April 9, 1879. December 8, 1883 she was married to William West who died Jan 29, 1893. August 10, 1897 she married Charles W. Shook who also served during the Civil War in the 9th Iowa Cavalry.

Mrs. Shook joined the Baptist church when a girl. She was of a quiet, unassuming disposition. Her principal interest in life was her home and family. For many years she has had poor health, but was able to be around the house most of the time till a couple of days before her death. The end came suddenly Wednesday afternoon, May 23, 1917, about four o'clock.

She is survived by her husband, Charles W. Shook, her son, James W. Kaufman, both of this place, three sisters, Mrs. Abby Potter, San Francisco, California, Mrs. Hattie E. Smith, Santa Ana, California, and Mrs. Alta Olson, Winston, Missouri, eight grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.

Relatives from out of town attending the funeral were, John Kaufman, Paul Moreau and family and Mrs Hattie Ostrander, of Glenwood, Minn., Floyd Kaufman and family of Waterloo, Elgin Blanchard and family of Elgin, Mrs. George Craft and little son of Brainard, Mrs. W. G. Kuemmin and Paul Shook of Fort Atkinson, Wis.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal church Friday afternoon. Rev. C. S. Burnard conducting the services. The floral offerings were pretty and profuse. Interment was made in the Waucoma cemetery.
