Funeral services for Verlon Lee Britt of Elgin, Iowa were held on Friday, July 31, 1998 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Elgin, Iowa. Rev. Arley Ellingson officiated at the service. Interment was in the Elgin Cemetery.

Verlon Lee Britt, age 60, died Saturday afternoon, July 25, 1998 from sudden heart failure. He was born July 6, 1938 in Glidden, Iowa to Austin L. and Margaret (Toyne) Britt. He graduated from Coe College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1956 and served in the Air Force where he was stationed at Bangor, Maine and Okinawa, Japan. While stationed in Okinawa, he met Catherine "Lolly" Handoe. They were married for thirty-five years.

After pursuing a career in banking for five years in Des Moines, Iowa, Verlon and Catherine bought the Elgin State Bank in 1972. He served as President and CEO of Elgin State Bank. He was appointed to the Environmental Regulatory Commission, was a Lions Club member, a Mason, a Shriner, and supporter of the Elgin community.

Verlon was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and supporter. He loved his Arabian horses and enjoyed taking his horses and carriage to local parades.He took great pride in planting trees and flowers on his homestead on Kellonto Lane. Verlon and Lolly enjoyed making wine from their grapevines and saw it as a challenge to improve their skills each year of harvest. Verlon and Catherine loved to travel throughout their life together, taking their children and grandchildren to many places of interest and fun.

Verlon is survived by his wife Catherine T. "Lolly" Britt of Elgin, Iowa; his daughter, Captain Kellee J. Metz and her husband Greg of Okinawa, Japan; his son, Lon A. Britt and his wife Stephanie and granddaughters, Megan and Emily of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and his son Tobin Lee Britt of Elgin, Iowa; his mother, Margaret Britt of Glidden, Iowa; his brother, Glen Britt and his wife Joan, of Bloomington, Illinois; and his sister Anna Lou Bowes and her husband Maurice of Annaheim, California.

Verlon was preceded in death by his father Austin L. Britt.
