Carroll G. Ehrhardt, 90 years and 4 days, a former resident of West Union, died Sunday, October 1, 2006 at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa following a long illness.

He was born in Communia, IA on September 27, 1916, son of George and Henrietta (Stein) Ehrhardt. He graduated from Oelwein High School in 1936 and Elkader Junior College in 1938. In 1939, Carroll married Ilo Mae Stiehl in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Garnavillo, Iowa.

Carroll worked at Rath Packing Company in Waterloo, Iowa, until 1944. At this time he joined the U.S. Navy, serving on a ship, USSPCS 1451, in the Aleutian Islands.

After discharge, he went farming with his father-in-law, K.J. Stiehl, on a farm near St. Olaf, Iowa. Under the GI Bill, Carroll studied locker operation and then later purchased Hawkeye Lockers in 1947. He was well known with the Iowa Meat Processors Association receiving many awards for his championship, prize winning products. He also served as president of the association.

In Hawkeye, he was Grand Master of the Masonic Lodge, Commander of the American Legion Post, and a member of the fire department for twenty-nine years as well as mayor and councilman for many years.

Carroll and Ilo Mae retired to West Union in 1976, and became active members of Bethel Presbyterian Church.

Carroll is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years, Ilo Mae Ehrhardt of Mason City; a son, Dr. Dennis K. Ehrhardt of Lafayette, Louisiana, a daughter, Debra L. Hanson of Mason City; three granddaughters, Deanna (Scott) Carew, Cindy (Robert) Kochansky both of Canton, Georgia and Kristin L. Hanson, Mason City; great-grandchildren, Austin and Kayleigh Carew and Julia and Katarina Kochansky all of Canton, Georgia.
