Elgin - Curtis L. Chapman, Elgin's oldest citizen and a Civil war veteran, died at his home here Saturday afternoon, April 19th, 1930, at the age of 91 years.

Mr. Chapman, a son of Wm. J. and Fannie Chapman, was born at Copley Center, Ohio, July 10, 1838, and was one of seven children, three of whom died in infancy, and a sister, Matilda Layton, died in the summer of 1918. His oldest brother, Jackson, was killed in the battle of Shiloh. His brother Delbert, who enlisted when he was 16 years old, died in 1921.

Mr. Chapman enlisted when a young man in Company E, 9th regiment of the Indiana infantry, and during the war he became sick and was forced to come home, but as soon as he was able, returned to his duties again.

His wife died Jan. 4th, 1926. He was the father of three children, two sons, Charles of Illyria and Delbert, who died a few years ago, and Della, who is at home.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at the Illyria church with Rev. J.J. Snyder officiating and burial was made in the cemetery nearby.
