John William McCarty II, 26, was shot and killed in Nicaragua. He was born at Oelwein, graduated from Washington High School in Cedar Rapids and the University of Iowa. He taught in the Cedar Rapids School System for a time and was teaching at the American Nicaraguan Embassy School in Managua, Nicaragua, at the time of his death.
