Elgin Echo, Thursday, 17 September 1896.

Last week, Thursday evening, our citizens were surprised to hear the weird and dreadful cry of fire. Upon investigation it was found that the residence of H. Malwitz was on fire, but after a few minutes work of many willing hands the blaze was extinguished. The cause of the fire was from the efforts of Charley Malwitz, aged eight years, and Arthur Malwitz, aged 10 years, to build a fire in a stove that was on the second floor of the dwelling. In some manner, no one will know just how, the oil can exploded setting the room and the clothing of the two children on fire. The fire was put out before very much damage was done to either the house or its contents, but not before the two boys and the mother's hands were very badly burned.

There was at first hopes entertained that the children were not burned fatally, but upon closer examination it was evident that Charley at least could not live. His death occurred Sunday morning at 2 o'clock. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the German Baptist church, conducted by Rev. Hack. Arthur is still alive and slowly improving in condition though he will certainly be horribly marked from the fire. Mrs. Malwitz, while very painfully burned, is recovering as rapidly as could be expected under the circumstances.

Mr. and Mrs. Malwitz and family have the sympathy of all Elgin in their misfortune and bereavement.
