Fayette County Leader, Thursday, 19 July 1928.

Nancy Jane Cook, was born at Lockport, New York, January 9, 1848, and departed this life at 8:15 Thursday evening of last week. At eight years of age she came with her parents to Verona, Wisconsin. Her schooling was interrupted when she had reached the upper grade of the local school by the fact that her father and two brothers entered the Army; and thus care and exertion for her mother and other members of the family were thrown upon her, and became a constant experience of her young life, and were elements of an incalculable value for the support and welfare of those about her. The traits of character and dependability thus induced in her were constantly displayed in later years in the attention she gave to her family and the unremitting labors of her home, carried to the extent that at certain long continued periods she did not leave its precincts even to go to town.

The home of her girlhood was Nine Mound Prairie, Dane County, Wisconsin. Her father was wounded and came home for a time, but reenlisted in Hancock's Veteran Corps, serving until the close of the war. One of her brothers was wounded at the battle of Shiloh and the other at Corinth.

She was married at Madison, Wisconsin, to William H. Bray. From this place, for a time their home, they removed to McGregor, Iowa; from thence they came to Fayette, the place of her residence since 1876.

Mr. Bray's death occurred in 1916, after years of service in the community as a mason.

Mrs. Bray's last illness dates from the time of the last Christmas season, though she had been a sufferer for years from some chronic ailments.

She had been for years a member of the Methodist church, active in the measure of her ability, conscientious and faithful in response to its dictates. Contributions and services were limited and restrained by age and infirmity. A poise of composure and cheerfulness never forsook her, and a kindly smile befitted her as she would so frequently be seen by her neighbors and the passersby in her attractive and well kept garden of vegetables and the loved flowers.

There survives her one sister, Mrs. C. W. Dyer of Toledo, Ohio; a nephew, Mr. Ernest Snyder, also resides at that place. Three other nephews are Forrest Doland of Maquoketa, Willis Doland of Los Angeles, and Adelbert Doland of Fayette.

Of her children, Ed Bray is of Fayette, Will and Mrs. Georgia Miner of Madison, Wisconsin, Mrs. Nellie Flanders of McGregor, Carrie Gilpin, Nettie Stevens and Jennie Anderson of Sioux City. Her oldest daughter, Mrs. Ida Fussell has preceded her in death. There are eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren having passed away.

The funeral services were conducted at the home Sunday afternoon by Rev. D. M. Parker. Interment was in Grandview.

NOTE: Mrs. Georgia Miner, who is shown as her child in this obituary, is actually her grandchild who was raised by her from childhood. Georgia is the daughter of Frank H. Fussell and Ida Fussell (nee Bray).

Submitter is not related.
