Elgin Echo, Thursday, May 7, 1896.

Thursday night April 28, 1896, occurred the death of Mrs. Nicholas Travis at her home in Clermont, Iowa. Funeral services were held at St. Peter's church and internment made in the Catholic cemetery at that place April 30, conducted by Father Coyle. Solemn Mass of Requiem was celebrated for her by Father Mulligan, of West Union, assisted by Father Reilly, of Elkader, and Father Coyle, of Clermont.

Father Coyle in his funeral address did high tribute to the departed one as a mother, wife, friend and neighbor. He compared the good mother to the Guardian Angel.

Mrs. Travis was about 62 years old when death closed her earthly career. She was born in Ireland and was married there to Nicholas Travis, but soon after emigrated with him to America and settled in Clayton County, Iowa, where their first son, John Travis, was born. A little later they moved to Clermont. At the time of the breaking out of the war there were four little children in the family, and though in poor circumstances, the father responded to the call of his adopted land and joined the Army as a true soldier of liberty, whilst the brave mother stayed at home toiling day and night, alike in summer and winter, in heat and cold, through those long weary years of anxiety and privation, for the support of her four little ones and that the home for which the father was fighting might be preserved. Then, as many times before and since, did she prove that she was one of the truest and noblest of women and an hundred times deserving of the name and adoration of mother. Her life in this world is done, and it has been well and nobly done. No more will we see the lovable form of our mother, our neighbor and our friend in the familiar walk of this world, but over and again will the example, the image and the memory of her be before us, guiding us to a better and higher path. She was a good woman and we honor her memory and her sacred dust for it.
