Phoebe Conner, was born in Greene County, Wisconsin, February 21, 1840, and died November 21, 1908. She was 68 years, nine months at the time of her death. In the year 1854 she came with her parents to Iowa and settled on a farm near Elgin, where she grew to womanhood. July 4, 1857, she was united in marriage to John DeSart, who died in the service of his country in 1864. Three sons were born to this union.
April 25, 1869, she was married to O. N. Hopkins, one son was born to this union but died in infancy. She leaves besides her husband three sons, Matthew, of Fort Madison, Francis and John, of this city, to mourn the loss of a kind and loving wife and mother.
Mrs. Hopkins had been a severe sufferer for some time but bore her afflictions with great fortitude and patience. All that medical skill and tender nursing could do to sustain life was done, but it was only a stay of deaths hand and on the above date this true wife, kind mother and honored neighbor paid natures last great debt and peacefully crossed to the other side.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the house conducted by Rev. R. T. Western and internment made in the Elgin Cemetery.
