Elgin Echo, Thursday, 16 January 1908.
Thursday morning, January 9, our citizens were grieved to learn of the sudden death of F. W. Schmidt who resided about 3 miles east of this city. On the above date Mr. Schmidt arose, apparently in his usual health, and went to the barn to perform the morning work. He had already milked three cows and while milking the fourth he fell backward from the stool and when those who were in the barn at the time rushed to his assistance, he was found to be unconscious. He was tenderly carried to the house and placed on the bed, where he expired in a few minutes, never having regained consciousness. Deceased was well and favorably known in this city and many expressions of sorrow are heard on all sides. Heart failure was the cause of death.
F. W. Schmidt was born in Eriswgh, Canton Bern, Switzerland, in the month of May 1832 and in the year 1852 emigrated to America. In 1864 he was married to Augusta Block, near Monroe, Wisconsin, and in the same year came to Iowa, settling on the farm which has since been his home. He is survived by his wife and four children, two daughters and two sons, Mary and Anna, Fred and John, and two brothers C. Theo. Schmidt, of our city and Rudolph, of Genoa, Italy, besides a large number of relatives and friends. Monday of this week funeral services were conducted at the Apostolic church east of town, Reverends Jacob Gehring, John Wenger and Fred Schupbach officiating. Interment was made in the cemetery at the church.
Thus another, who has been identified with this part of the country for nearly a half-century, has passed away and those who were most closely associated with him in life will greatly miss their honored friend and neighbor.
