Elgin Echo, Thursday, 9 January 1908.

Elizabeth Margaret Carmichael, was born at Carmichaeltown, Greene County, Pennsylvania, February 26, 1832. Removed with her parents to Mount Tabor, Indiana, during her early girlhood days where she united with the M. E. Church at the age of 18. In 1853 she removed to Illyria, Fayette County, Iowa, and married John McMillan in 1854. Removed to Elgin in 1873 where she has since resided. She leaves five daughters, Mrs. C. M. Fritz, of Highland; Mrs. F. L. Seaver, of Elgin; Mrs. M. J. Nicholson, of Ossian; Mrs. H. W. Baldwin, of Quincy, Washington; Mrs. U. G. Gruver, of Cedar Rapids and Mary Judith who died in childhood and one son, H. McMillan, of Elgin; all of whom were at her bedside during her last illness. She passed away at 6:30 AM January 4 at the home of her son, aged 75 years, 10 months and nine days. She was a great sufferer for the past eight months but has borne it all with fortitude and patience and constantly expressed her readiness and desire to pass to the great beyond. In addition to raising her own family of seven children she assisted in the care of several of her grandchildren. Mrs. McMillan's anxiety and thoughts were always for the welfare of her children and friends rather than that of herself. Her whole life was filled with unselfish devotion to her dear ones and she never complained. Her last days were full of praise and prayer and her trust in God was strong. Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church at 1:00 PM on Monday, January 6, Rev. Gallagher officiating. Many relatives and friends from a distance followed her to her last resting place. May she rest in peace.
