Elgin Echo, Thursday, 26 September 1918.

Our whole community was saddened Saturday when the word was passed along that our respected and loved citizen Charles Fritz, had passed on to the other world during the previous night. Mr. Fritz had made a gallant fight for life, and although he had the best of medical care and nursing, slowly but surely, the grim reaper came nearer and nearer until the end came.

About four years ago Mr. and Mrs. Fritz retired from the farm coming to Elgin to reside, where they had built a modern and comfortable home. Here they resided and enjoyed life until about a year ago when Mr. Fritz suffered injuries from a fall. From that time he did not seem to regain his usual health. Then other complications set in and it was thought best that he go to Iowa city for a surgical operation. On April 24, accompanied by his wife, he went to that city and entered the hospital where the operation was performed. He did not seem to gain strength and he remained at the hospital for treatment until August 6, when they return to their home in Elgin. Here he seemed to rally, but it was only for a short time. Then he gradually grew weaker until the end came.

Mr. Fritz was born near Heidelberg, Germany, November 10, 1853, and died at his home in Elgin, September 20, 1918.

He came to America when he was 18 years of age, and settled in Highland Township, Clayton County. Afterward he was a cabinet maker in Elkader for many years until his health failed, when he went to farming to improve it by outdoor life.

In the year 1876 he was united in marriage to Miss Louise Ernst, who preceded him in death many years. To this union two daughters were born, Mrs. Clara Yearous, who died June 3, 1911, and Mrs. Max Guyer, who survives. There are four grandchildren.

On April 10, 1895, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Nannie M. Smith, who survives him and through his long illness has been his constant companion and tender nurse.

Funeral services were held from the M. E. Church Monday afternoon, Rev. George Galde officiating, and the remains were laid to rest in the Elgin Cemetery.

Thus Elgin loses one of her respected citizens and the community a man who was always ready and willing to lend a helping hand to the needy and those in distress. Although his body is laid to rest in the silent tomb, the memory of his many good deeds will long remain with the many friends who are left behind.
