Elgin Echo, Thur., 04 May 1899.

At West Union, on April 28, 1899, occurred the death of S. S. Ainsworth. Funeral services were held Monday, May 1, at the M.E. church in West Union, conducted by Rev. Davis under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity, and interment was made in the West Union cemetery.

S. S. Ainsworth was born at New Woodstock, Madison county, New York, Oct. 18, 1816. His parents were natives of Connecticut and emigrated to Madison county, New York, in 1805. In 1856 he came to West Union, Iowa, where he had since resided. He was married in 1845 to Miss Frances Douglars in New York, who died in 1853, leaving two children, James D. Ainsworth, a newspaper man now of Denver, Col., and a daughter who died when about 10 years old. He was married again in 1860 to Mary A. Hawkins, who survives him. Three children were born to them, two dying in infancy and one daughter, Mrs. C. G. Jones, now living in New Jersey. Both his children were present at his funeral.

S. S. Ainsworth was a resident of Fayette county longer than all but a few of the living have recollection of; he was known to most of the older citizens and to many of the younger generation; for he was, in the years of his energy, at once a public man and an instructor. His knowledge of life and of science, literature and history caused his opinions to be much sought after by those who would learn. He was loved by all his acquaintances; for his was of that kind and gentle nature which receives respect and homage without asking; one of those plain men whom nature places among her common people to adorn and beautify them in their simplicity. For eighty three years he labored in life's vineyard and his measure having been filled the spirit departed, leaving behind it such a vintage of happy influences as shall endear the memories of him until his name is forgotten.
