Memorial services were held at 10:30 a.m. August 4, 2012 at Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader, IA for Dennis Lee Butikofer, 76, of Elkader, who passed away late Wednesday afternoon, August 1, 2012, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m. August 3, 2012 at Leonard Funeral Home in Elkader and one hour before services at the church on Saturday. Interment was August 4, 2012 at East Side Cemetery in Elkader, IA.
Dennis Lee Butikofer was born May 25, 1936, at Elgin, Iowa, the son of Lawrence Leroy and Carolyn (Weigand) Butikofer. He graduated from Elgin High School in 1954, working as a carpenter for several years before going into the Army.
He married JoAnn Fette on October 20, 1962.
After the Army he worked for Schneider Construction for many years and then for the Keystone Area Education Agency in Elkader, as Maintenance Supervisor until his retirement in 2005.
After his retirement, he spent many hours volunteering his time and talent as a carpenter at Peace Church and doing odd jobs for friends. Dennis was very proud of his family and enjoyed visiting them as often as possible. His grandchildren were his treasures. Another favorite was being able to go out for breakfast with several of his friends several times a month and a card game now and then. His other interest was seeing the country and traveling to other parts of the country or world.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, JoAnn; his children, DeAnn (Greg) Banks of Paola, KS, and Dr. Jamie (Liz) Butikofer of Clarksville, GA; 6 grandchildren, Emma and Sarah Banks of Paola, KS, and Jacob, Madison, Samuel and Sidney Butikofer of Clarksville, GA; sister, Sheryl Schroeder of Clermont; brother Larry Butikofer of West Union; one niece and three nephews.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Carolyn Butikofer; sister, Shirley Ann; sister-in-law, Sarah Butikofer; brother-in-law, Marvin Schroeder and his mother and father-in-law, Florence and Valmah “Dutch” Gossman.
