Funeral Services Held For Len T. Simek
Funeral Services were held at the Elgin Baptist Church on Monday of last week for Len T. Simek, prominent Clermont business man, who passed away May 28 of injuries received in an automobile accident near Clarion. Rev. Paul F. Zoschke of Cleveland, Ohio officiated assisted by Rev. Arthur Itterman. Burial was in the Clermont cemetery.
Len Theodore Simek, son of Joseph and Emma (Miguet) Simek, was born at Hazelton, Iowa, on July 4, 1904 and died at Clarion, Iowa, on Thursday May 28, 1953, following an automobile accident near Clarion, on Wednesday evening. He was aged 48 years, 10 months and 24 days. He was baptized in the Hazelton Presbyterian Church on June 11, 1905 and took active part in the young people's church activities, while living in Hazelton. Since coming to Clermont his church interest was in the Elgin Baptist Church.
Mr. Simek was graduated from the Hazelton high school and was a 1928 graduate of Upper Iowa University where he was a varsity letter man in all major sports. His association with Dr. John Dorman, while at U. I. U. was one of the high points in his life. He had made plans to attend the 25th reunion of his class at this years commencement.
After completing his education he began his business career in the Hazelton State Bank, leaving there to go into construction work with the Elliott Construction Company of Independence.
In 1929 he moved to Clermont and became associated with the Clermont Brick and Sand Company, later becoming manager and owner. More recently he expanded the business to include road surfacing. During the past five years the Clermont Brick and Sand Co. had road re-surfacing contracts in Cerro Gordo and neighboring counties. In addition to his regular business responsibilities, he managed several farms.
He took an active part in all community affairs and was always in the fore-ranks of those who were working for the interest and betterment of his home town. He was a member of the Clermont City Council from 1936-1940, served two terms as mayor from 1940-1944 and was president of Commercial Club in 1938. He was one of the founders of Clermont Dairy Day and served on the first general committee in 1937, serving continuously until recently. He was a member of the Iowa Road Surfacing Association and had served on their board of directors.
On October 15, 1930, he was married to Grace Miller of Clermont by Rev. Phillip Lauer.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Lera, and by his parents. He is survived by his wife, one sister, Lavonne Walker of Swan, Iowa, and two nieces, Beverly and Barbara Walker, and several aunts and uncles.
