LEON SARGENT'S FATHER DIES

Funeral services for Emery H. Sargent, 84, who passed away the first day of March, were held at the Methodist Church here Sunday at three o'clock with the Rev. R. Park Anderson officiating. The music was by Dr. and Mrs. R. W. Dutton and Mrs. Lloyd Kramer. Those who bore the casket were Manuel G. Arnold, Charles L. Blanchard, George W. Barr, John W. Tinker, Fred Tracy and John R. Tracy. Burial was in the Strawberry Point cemetery.

Mr. Sargent was born near Strawberry Point, January 18, 1860, the son of Emery H. and Louisa Sargent. He was married to Ophelia Waite, May 27, 1882 at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. They farmed for many years in this community. Mrs. Sargent died March 29, 1940. Until a few months ago Mr. Sargent had made his home in town, until going to the home of his son, Ralph, to live. He died of a heart attack. Some months ago he had suffered a similar attack but soon recovered.

Nearly all of Mr. Sargent's life was spent in this community, on the farm southwest of town. Here his father and mother had homesteaded. His early schooling was in the nearby schoolhouse. When a small boy Mr. Sargent helped his father haul ties for the new railroad. After his father's death he managed the home farm. Here his family of nine children grew up and attended the same school he had attended as a boy. The religious training in those early days was dependent upon the intermittent services held at the County Corners Methodist Church.

Surviving are nine children, Ralph and Stanley, near Alpha, Emery of Cedar Rapids, Leon of Arlington, Mrs. Ed Fink of Springville, Harford, Elwin, Mrs. C. C. Kimpston and Paul, all of Strawberry Point, 17 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Mr. Sargent was a member of the Methodist Church and of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

Also surviving Mr. Sargent is one sister, Mrs. Harriet Dunsmoor. - Mail Press.
