- Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at the
Baptist church for George W. Gilbert, the pastor Rev.
F. E. Dean officiating. Mr. Gilbert died Friday, after a
long illness during the latter part of which he was a
great sufferer. George William Gilbert was born in Quebec,
Canada, February 28, 1841 and died June 1, 1917, aged
76 years, three months and three days. When a child
of three years his parents moved to Rockford, Illinois, where
the boy grew to manhood. At the age of nineteen, he
enlisted in the Eleventh Illinois Volunteers and saw almost
two years service in the Civil War. During his service he
contracted small pox which necessitated his discharge from
the army. Following his army service he came to Eldorado,
Iowa where on February 25, 1866 he was married to Miss
Elizabeth Dewey. Ten years later they moved to West Union,
where they have since made their home. Besides Mrs. Gilbert,
he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Earl Ostrander of
Auburn and Mrs. Carl Ostrander of West Union; three grand
children and two half brothers. His kindly and helpful
disposition won for him a large circle of friends among his
comrades in the G. A. R. and other acquaintances, all of
whom will miss him.Oelwein Daily Register - 5 June 1917
