Archibald (Archie) McClain 1833-1908

Archibald McClain was born in
Indiana County, Pa., July 19, 1833,
and died May 8, 1908, at the residence
of his daughter, Rose, Mrs. Marshall
Leaman, in Fayette county, Iowa,
near Sumner, of heart disease, dissolution
taking place shortly after-five
o'clock in the morning, he having
arisen with the family, and was dressed
and down stairs. He had been
poorly for some time, and recently
had gone home with his son-in-law
and daughter from his quarters in
Sumner.
Mr. McClain came to Iowa over fifty
years ago, living in Butler and Franklin
counties for a while, and then
came to Fayette county. He returned
to his old home and remained for a
year or so, then married Nancy Piper,
Dec. 24th, 1863, and came back to
Iowa in the following spring, and had
lived here ever since that time, He
was the father of five children, of
whom Lizzie and Arlie preceded him in
death, and Ida, Samuel and Rose are
left to mourn his loss. He was converted
to the Christian faith while In
the western part of the state, and
continued to be a faithful Christan,
belonging to the church nearest his
choice wherever be lived, and at the
time of his death was a member of the
Methodist Episcopal church at Sumner,
the pastor of which, Rev. V. E.
Hall preached the funeral at Murphy
U. B. church, assisted in the service
by Rev. S. B. McVay, pastor of that
church. Interment was made in
Greenwood cemetery. The deceased
was an old settler and a large crowd
attended the funeral services.
