Mrs. Mary D. Hartsough, daughter
of Daniel and Mary Bronson, was born
near Cleveland. Ohio, Sept. 11, 1819,
and died Jan. 15, 1897, at the home
of her youngest son, in Monticello,
lowa. In 1837 she was married to
Elisha. D. Hartsough and with him removed
to Coldwater, Michigan; thence
to LaFayette county, Wisconsin, and
in 18?0 settled in Fayette county, Iowa.
Eight years they lived in Day county,
S. D.
Mr. and Mrs. Hartsough were the
parents of eleven children, eight of
whom are still living, viz: Harvey D,
of Butler county, S. D., Rev. Wm. D.,
of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Mrs. Electa
M. Shiek, of Fayette, Iowa; Clark C.,
of Webster, S. D.; Rev. D. Maurice,
of Des Moines, Iowa; Porter L , of
Oelwein, Iowa; and Rev. W. W. of
Monticello, Iowa.
One brother and two sisters survive
her, viz: Rev. H. S. Bronson, of
Fayette, Iowa; Mrs. Nancy Lay, of
Jackson, Michigan and Mrs. Mercy
Comstock, of Madison, Wisconsin.
Soon after marriage Mr. and Mrs.
Hartsough embraced the Christian religion
and united with the Methodist
Episcopal church and continued acceptable
members until death. The
religious experience of Mrs. Hart-
sough grew brighter and richer until
the end of life. Her last illness was
short and realizing that her work was
done, she was anxious to join loved
ones who had , proceeded her to the
better land. As wife and mother she
was true and faithful and her children
