As was feared when we went to press last week, we have
this week to chronicle the death of another one of the
early pioneers of this part of the State, Mr. Alva Smith.
Deceased was born in Palmer, Massachusetts, May 18,
1814 and died in Oelwein, Iowa on April 24, 1896, aged
81 years, 11 months and 6 days. In June 1847 he was
united in marriage with Miss Susan Ordway and to them
were born three children, one of whom died about 20
years ago. The remaining children, Mr. G. W. Smith and
Mrs. Abbie Pickard are residents of Oelwein.
The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the
residence of his son, being conducted by Rev. Olin W. Rose
and were very largely attended; Mr. Smith being one of the
earliest settlers in this part of the state and universally
respected.Oelwein Register - 30 April 1896
